European regulations 2027: what you need to understand
From 2027, certain European regulations concerning cosmetic ingredients will change. As was already the case with TPO in 2025, the European Union continues to update certain rules regarding various ingredients used in cosmetic products. These changes may affect certain UV/LED gels as well as cuticle oils, cleaners, fragranced products, pigments or specific effects used in the nail industry. At DesignNailArt, we actively monitor these developments to anticipate future European standards and continue to offer compliant products.
Why these changes?
Cosmetic products sold in Europe are governed by Regulation (EC) No 1223/2009. When an ingredient is re-evaluated by the European authorities, it may:
- be limited to a certain concentration
- be authorized only in certain types of products
- be phased out gradually
- or be banned if the authorities consider that its use must change
These changes concern only certain specific ingredients and not all nail products.
Should you be worried?
No.
European regulations generally provide timeframes that allow manufacturers, brands and distributors to gradually adapt their products when necessary.
To date, there is no general ban on UV/LED products or nail products in Europe.
Cosmetic products evolve regularly: some formulas may be updated over time, without calling into question the overall use of the products.
These changes do not mean nail products are being banned. They concern certain specific ingredients, depending on their concentration and the type of product. Regulatory timelines allow for a gradual adaptation.
Which ingredients are currently affected or being monitored?
The latest European regulatory developments notably concern certain ingredients that may be present in various cosmetic products:
| Ingredient | INCI name | Potentially affected products |
|---|---|---|
| Triphenyl Phosphate | Triphenyl Phosphate | Certain gels, polishes or flexible products |
| Silicone D4 | Cyclotetrasiloxane | Certain fluid or silicone-based products |
| Silicone D5 | Cyclopentasiloxane | Oils, care products, fluid products |
| Silicone D6 | Cyclohexasiloxane | Oils, care products, fluid products |
| Citral | Citral | Cuticle oils, fragranced products |
| Benzyl Salicylate | Benzyl Salicylate | Cuticle oils, fragranced products |
| Certain aluminum compounds | Varies depending on the formulas | Pigments, chrome effects, cat eye, pearlescent effects |
| Certain soluble zinc salts | Varies depending on the formulas | Certain care products or specific products |
These ingredients are not present in all products. When they are used, it does not automatically mean the product is banned: it all depends on the concentration used, the type of product and the future application dates set by European regulations.
